York British Academy needed a modern digital experience to support its online education model. The project included a public-facing website and an admin dashboard designed for instructors to manage courses, assignments, student progress, and communication—within a British-education context. The goal was to make day-to-day teaching workflows faster, clearer, and easier to track.
The Challenge
Online education platforms often prioritize student-facing features, while instructor tools remain fragmented: course management feels heavy, tracking student progress lacks clarity, and communication tools don’t support timely feedback. This leads to extra manual work for instructors and weaker learning follow-up for students.
My Role
UX/UI Design
Research, IA, Wireframes, Prototyping, Usability Testing, UI & Interaction Design.
Duration: 6 weeks (12 Oct – 30 Nov)
Tools
Figma, Google Forms, ChatGPT
Goals
I translated the problem into five product goals:
Efficiency: streamline core management tasks so instructors spend less time on admin work.
Engagement: support interactive tools that help instructors keep students involved.
Assessment: improve assignment handling and feedback loops for learning outcomes.
Insights: provide analytics that help instructors understand performance and participation.
Communication: enable clear announcements and messaging to reduce confusion and delays.
Target Audience
Primary: Instructors/Teachers using online platforms daily (primary → higher education).
Secondary: School administrators who oversee learning initiatives.
Additional: Training professionals and EdTech specialists supporting adoption and improvement.
Key Pain Points
- Course management complexity: too many steps and scattered actions.
- Engagement & interaction gaps: limited tools to keep sessions active and collaborative.
- Assessment inadequacy: weak visibility into submissions, progress, and timely feedback
Behind the scenes
UX Approach
Process
I used a user-centered process and mapped it into clear phases:
1.Understand
User research and interviews
Competitive analysis
2.Define
Personas + empathy map
User journey mapping
3. Ideate
User flows + information architecture
4. Design
Wireframes → high-fidelity UI → prototype
5.Test
Feedback collection → iteration → future improvements roadmap
Information Architecture & User Flow
The experience was structured around a simple onboarding path that routes instructors into core management areas:
Start → Home → Register → Account Type → Main Modules
Core modules include: Dashboard, Courses/My Courses, Assignments, Sessions, Settings with supporting actions like announcements and access control—so instructors can move from overview → action without digging through menus.
UI Direction & Design System
Visual Style
A dark, professional UI was chosen to support long working sessions and reduce visual fatigue, while keeping focus on data and actions.
Style Guide
Primary color: #00D4D4
Secondary color: #07898F
Font: Montserrat (with clear hierarchy for headings/body/button text)
Iconography: Outline + Bold sets for clarity in navigation and actions
Final Solution Highlights
Dashboard (High-Fidelity)
A modular dashboard provides quick status visibility (courses, students, assignments, announcements) with clear navigation and a strong header/CTA area for frequent actions
Other Screens
Additional screens cover instructor workflows such as:
My Courses & course lists
Assignments overview + creation flow
Communication/announcements
Settings & access management
york Dashboard & Website Layout
Dark Mode + Responsive
The interface was designed to work consistently across devices, including responsive layouts and mobile screens for key tasks—ensuring instructors can check progress and manage essentials on the go
Outcome
Delivered a complete instructor-focused dashboard UI with core workflows mapped through IA and user flows.
Built a scalable design system (typography, color, icon sets) to keep future screens consistent.
Produced responsive layouts and dark-mode patterns aligned with productivity-focused usage.
